Can having gum problems hurt the fetus in the womb?

Not really: Sever gum problems with infection that is untreated could potentially cause problems. If you are following recommendations to heal the gum problems the baby should be fine.

Yes, low birth weigh: Medical studies have shown repeatedly that expectant mothers who have untreated gum disease give birth to lower weight babies. Obviously, something about the gum disease causes that, but it is not known specifically. If your obstetrician oks it, go ahead and get your gum disease treated and help your fetus (baby)!
