We would know: That if you lost weight and stayed in one place and did not get the pain. Sounds like a compression neuropathy coming from your back. Do you have any low back pain? I would see a doc to have you evaluated either with back xxray/mri or emg/ncv studies to see if there is pressure on a nerve in the back causing the problem. In meantime, if you can lose some weight, it may very well be helpful.

Probably not: This is usually due to a temporary nerve compression that creates the numbness, like when you sleep on your wrist and have numbness to the area that goes away when you move it.
