Sore Neck: Neck pain is discomfort in any of the structures in the neck. These include muscles and nerves as well as spinal vertebrae and the cushioning disks in between. See your local orthopedic doctor for a diagnosis and therapy.

Muscle/tendon: Inflammation or being misaligned. If you use your shoulder to talk on the phone a lot that can cause chronic muscle spasm. Ligament strain can cause it. Chronic stress and having shoulders hunched can do it. As can dehydration, poor diet, sleeping wrong, bad pillow. A massage can help as can acupuncture, chinese medicine, homeopathy, and a visit with your doctor to discuss all the possible causes.
