It depends: Some people can have a few renal cysts that will not have any affect on long term renal function. There are some people who have extensive cyst disease that can ultimately cause renal failure. It is rare that cyst disease progresses to renal failure. Progressive renal insufficiency is more often seen in people with diabetes and hypertension which have been poorly controlled.
