Cotinine: “When someone stops using tobacco and nicotine products, it can take more than two weeks for the blood level of cotinine to drop to the level that a non-tobacco user would have and several weeks more for the urine level to decrease to a very low concentration.” REF: http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/nicotine/tab/test/

24-48 hours: nicotine is usually not what is tested for, but its main metabolite cotinine. Nicotine is extremely short-acting - that is why people smoke 20 cigarettes a day (or about one an hour when awake). Cotinine lasts longer, and can be found in blood for 1-2 days and in urine for 2-3 days. Oral swabs can detect it potentially for slightly longer.
