Emphysema: Find out if your mother had alpha-1 anti-trypsin deficiency. You could be tested for this condition.

May be: Some forms of COPD are genetic, look up alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. You may also be more susceptible to develop COPD if you have a family history, best you can do is avoid exposures, especially smoking.

Genetic form...: There is an inherited form of COPD called alpha-1-anti trypsin deficiency. It is caused by an enzyme deficiency and treatment involves enzyme replacement. It is diagnosed by a blood test that your family practice doctor can order. Patients with this disorder develop COPD at a younger age and smoking accelerates the process. See your doctor for testing!
