Aircast brace: These fractures are usually treated like ankle sprains. An aircast brace is a clam shell like brace that provides stability to the ankle and decreases swelling. The brace is used for walking for about 3 weeks. Physical therapy is usually prescribed, and the ankle usually feels much better at about 6weeks, with healing taking about 3months. Overall, not a bad fracture, and patients do very well.

Brace then PT: Simple avulsion fractures typically are treated with a brace then physical therapy. It is treated generally the same as an acute lateral ankle sprain. Recovery times should be in the 2-4 week range.
