Airways inflammed: When the airways--large and small--are inflammed either by infections, chemical burn (i.E smoke/chemical/drug inhalations) can cause pain/burning sensation when you cough (air pushing through at over 100mile/hr speed). Similar to a rug-burn: touch it, blow on it, wet it--it hurts! use some cough meds such as mucinex-dm, cough-drops etc... If not better, consult doc for eval/treatment. Good luck.
