Depends: For many it is genetic - you get it from your parents. Eating poorly can also cause a bad lipid panel: high amounts of sugar, saturated fat, processed foods and smoking can all have a negative impact on lipids. Some, however, eat and exercise perfectly and still have a horrid lipid panel - that's where medicines can help!

No information ??: It depends how high, what ratio (ldl/hdl/triglycerides), and whether you have a family history of similar. If more than 20-30% above normal range, likely diet and exercise will not work without major life changes you may not stick to--so will need to be on medication from the -statin family. Talk to your dr about options.

No: Two separate diseases by they tend to happen together in most of the time, high cholesterol can be genetic or related to your life style. Same with hypertension. Having both together will increase the risks and complications from both.
