What causes people to have high cholesterol?

Dr. Maureen Mays

Depends: For many it is genetic - you get it from your parents. Eating poorly can also cause a bad lipid panel: high amounts of sugar, saturated fat, processed foods and smoking can all have a negative impact on lipids. Some, however, eat and exercise perfectly and still have a horrid lipid panel - that's where medicines can help!

What are the causes of high cholesterol in humans?

Dr. William Haynes

Genes and diet: Most people with high cholesterol inherit one or several abnormal genes that give them a high level. When levels are very high this is called familial hypercholesterolemia, and can cause heart attacks even in children. Diet is a contributor to high cholesterol but is less important, though if a patient is overweight, then weight loss can reduce cholesterol by 20-30%.

A 22-year-old male asked:

Is high cholesterol level can be cured for people of my age?

Dr. Donald Alves
Emergency Medicine 24 years experience
No information ??: It depends how high, what ratio (ldl/hdl/triglycerides), and whether you have a family history of similar. If more than 20-30% above normal range, likely diet and exercise will not work without major life changes you may not stick to--so will need to be on medication from the -statin family. Talk to your dr about options.

No: Two separate diseases by they tend to happen together in most of the time, high cholesterol can be genetic or related to your life style. Same with hypertension. Having both together will increase the risks and complications from both.
