See a hand surgeon: Trigger finger is very common and can be treated with steroid injections. These can be done in the office and have a very good chance of resolving the triggering. If these are ineffective, a small outpatient operation will be. I see a lot of trigger fingers and do a lot of injections but very few operations: the injections are quite effective.

Try this: Otc meds such as Motrin if tolerated and splint the finger so the middle joint can't move and do this for a couple of days. If no better than see your doc for a cortisone shot.

Injections/Surgery: About 80-90% of trigger fingers will resolve in a 2-3 month period, with 1-2 injections of steroid and conservative treatment. Patients with diabetes and thumbs stuck in extension don't respond as well to non-operative treatment. Surgery is the definitive treatment for this problem and has excellent results. See a board certified orthopaedic hand surgeon for further evaluation and treatment.

Cortisone shot: A cortisone shot has ~50% cure. If not a per cutaneous release will cure the problem.
