Yes: You need a good therapist with experience in self injury to help you understand why you want to self harm in the first place. "distraction" doesn't begin to get to the root cause and that is what needs to happen for healing.

Distraction/self har: Having someone you trust close by helps to distract yourself for the moment & seek support you need from him/her to get you over the bad feeling. Also, bring this up to your therapist as part of the work in cognitive behavior therapy to help you own & take responsibility for your thoughts & behaviors & gain control , & to monitor your progress in your journal to discuss in therapy.
