Muscle-degenerative: It is either muscular in nature or related to some underlying degenerative changes in the cervical spine. Avoiding prolonged positions and awkward ones and maintaining good head posture can help as well as simple stretching exercises especially when in a hot shower or using some otc medications if needed. Consider sleeping with one thin pillow and cessation of tobacco & regular exercise.
