Poisonous substance: From greek word toxicon) produced within living cells, i.E bacteria, insects, fungi or plants. Antharx, botulinum, bee stings, snake bites, poison ivy poison from deadly fungi are all examples. Often erroneously used interchangeably with toxicants or toxics which are man made or in-organic substances which can be toxic. Thse can be man made drugs, or chemicals like mercury etc.

Agency: Poison is something that does harm to or will even kill you. It can be inorganic like arsenic, lead. -- a toxin is usually more biologic and is produced by a plant or animal and can also do harm or make you sick (botulism) -- venom implies agency ie that some creature is biting, injecting, stinging or some other way instilling the venom into your body (bee sting, scorpion, snake bite).
