Displaced TMJ disc: Your jaw pops when you eat because you probably have a displaced TMJ disc. The disc sits on top of the jaw joint (condyle) and should move smoothly and quietly down and forward when you open and close your mouth. If it slips forward, which it commonly does, it starts to make a popping noise when you open and close your mouth.
