Bursitis: Trochanteric bursitis or inflammation of the the fluid filled sack over the hip bone (greater trochanter) is a common cause of lateral hip pain in runners. If stretching and anti-inflammatory medications have not helped, you should get a steroid injection. You r primary care doc can do this or if they are not comfortable with it, get a referral to pain management.
