Diagnosis: Using small needles and mild electrical shocks, the EMG can test normal vrs abnormal nerve and muscle function, and show muscle, nerve, or neuromuscular connection problems. Diagnosis of a pinched nerve in neck or back or leg or arm can be documented. Based on this test, appropriate treatment can be initiated.

Tolerable discomfort: There are two parts to an EMG test: nerve conduction studies and electromyography. Nerve conduction studies feel like a short, electrical impulse and are, in a word, annoying. Emg uses a fine wire electrode to record from muscles and feels like an insect bite. It is not as bad as a shot or IV or blood draw. Several muscles and several nerves are usually checked.
