Sometimes: If you haven't worn your retainer in a while they can be difficult to insert and remove. Retainers also take a little getting used to taking them in and out. Your orthodontist can adjust them for you if needed.

Yes: Retainers should be tight enough to hold the teeth in place but if you are having any pain, you should get it adjusted.

Consistency matters: Hard to remove retainers generally indicate inconsistency with your retainer wear, your teeth will wander a little at first and then more as you continue not wearing your retainer. I recommend wearing your retainer for a several weeks full time to reposition your teeth, this may require some advil (ibuprofen) to get through...As your teeth realign, the pressure reduces and you feel fine again.

No: They should fit firmly, but you should be able to take them in and out without too much difficulty every day. I would schedule an appointment to see your orthodontist to discuss your issues with them.

Maybe: Did you just get the retainer? Sometimes a new retainer needs to loosen up with time. Did you not wear your retainer for a while? It could be that your teeth moved and is jamming your retainer in. The retainer may move the teeth back in place and feel normal again soon. If it does not self correct in a day or two you need to see your dentist.

No: Sounds like teeth are slipping. If retainers not worn properly, teeth will shift, making removal difficult. Please have your orthodontist evaluate shat's going on.
