What could cause bruising behind my knee 5 days after straining my mcl?

Bleeding: When you sprain the mcl, you tear the ligament. This caused bleeding in the location of the tear. You probably elevated the knee, so the blood travelled behind your knee and collected where you see bruising. That is completely normal. It may even become sore in the bruised area because of an inflammatory response.

MCl sprain: The bruising is blood that could have resulted from the mcl sprain or an associated tendon tear. The cause can be better evaluated with an mri.
