What kinda psychiatric problems happen to doctors?

10 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

All kinds: I have seen doctors with every type of psychiatric problem and have heard of doctors who have schizophrenia. When i was a fellow in child & adolescent psychiatry at johns hopkins hospital, i had a patient who developed schizophrenia while in medical school. Doctors are in no way "immune" from all or any of the conditions which they might treat.

Any and all: I agree with dr. Passer that physicians are not immune from mental illnesses -- most commonly depression. About 13% of male physicians and about 20% of female physicians experience depression during their lifetimes -- similar to general population. Higher rates in training. Chemical dependency including alcoholism too. Suicide risk is 70% higher in male physicians & 200-400% higher in females.

ALL OF THEM: Earning a medical degree does not insure you from having problems like any other human being. We can all get anything another person can.
