Why the skin is so susceptible to getting cancer?

3 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Exposure to sun: The skin is the largest organ on your body and it's what protects you from the environment. It's exposed to the sun everyday. The average person gets about 22 hours of sun a week just from normal living (walking to and from work, shopping, sitting in the car). Sun causes damage to the skin in the form of free radicals which causes aging and can lead to formation of precancers and skin cancers.

Skin Cancer : Because the skin is so superficial, it is constantly being exposed to harmful radiation from the sun. Besides obvious suntanning and burning, the average person, merely from being outside, is exposed daily to these harmful rays of the sun. Some people have a generic predisposition to skin cancer, and fair skinned, blue-eyed folks are at higher risk because they have less protective melanin pigment.
