Depends: The real flu is influenza virus. A cold is usually rhinovirus, but sometimes one of many others. The influenza symptoms are usually more severe, very high fever, very deep cough, not just a little achy but achy like a truck ran over you then backed up and did it again. Influenza can be tested and treated to decrease severity if you get seen early.
