See your doctor: Was the hernia surgery performed recently or a long tine ago? Best to have a physical examination. Unless there is an obvious bulge or swelling at the site that is new, it would be difficult for you to know without having a physical examination with your doctor.

Recurrent Hernia: A recurrent hernia will usually manifest as a sudden appearance of sharp pain at the same operative site. An intermittent bulge may then appear, just as it may have done previously. This bulge usually reappears on a regular basis, particularly after coughing, sneezing, straining and prolonged standing. It may disappear with lying down. I suggest you reconsult your surgeon.

Pain and/or bulge: Typically, there would be pain/discomfort and/or a bulge. There could also be a return of whatever signs or symptoms you had that led to the diagnosis of a hernia. If your concerned, see your surgeon for and exam. Urgency depends of severity if problem. Hope this helps!
