does a hernia go away?

Hernia: Hernia is a defect/hole in the fascia. They can stay the same or get worse, which is why doctors recommend surgical repair. If they worsen, they can cause serious health problems. Take a friend with you to see your doc and get the hernia evaluated. An elective surgical repair is a good way to handle this problem. Be well.

No: A hernia is a hole. It doesn't go away in adults unless it gets fixed. You may notice that the buldge goes down or away meaning that whatever was stuck in the hernia is no longer stuck, but the hole is still there. Belly button hernias in infants can go away on their own, sometimes belly button hernias with pregnancy go away after childbirth.
Dr. David Earle
General Surgery 31 years experience
Not usually: Belly button hernias in infants can go away on their own, usually by age 4-5. Unfortunately, the only way a hernia goes away in adults is with a surgical repair.
Dr. George Deitrick
General Surgery 45 years experience
No it will not.: An inguinal (groin) hernia will not go away on its own. It will need to be repaired.

Are hernias inherited?

Dr. Barry Rosen
General Surgery 34 years experience
Some are.: Hernias develop due to weak points in the abdominal wall. Many of these form as "birth defects" during fetal life without any clear hereditary component. Others may develop due to an inherited weakness in the way collagen crosslinks. Still others may form following trauma such as a surgical incision.

Are bilateral femoral hernias common?

Dr. Barry Rosen
General Surgery 34 years experience
Yes, in women.: In general, hernias are much more common in men than women (these are typically groin or inguinal hernias); however, femoral hernias are more common in women. Likewise, it is more common to have a hernia on one side rather than both, but "double" hernias do occur in about 10% of people who have a hernia on one side.

Is there such a thing as a sports hernia?

2 doctor answers6 doctors weighed in
Dr. Paul Harper
General Surgery 52 years experience
Yes: A sports hernia is a much more significant injury than a standard run-of-the-mill inguinal (groin) hernia. The damage is usually much more significant. I have seen several of these during my career and they are very difficult to fix properly. Nerves tend to be damaged, floor of the inguinal canal instead of being weakened is torn, and the sports hernia can encompass several layers instead of one.
A 48-year-old member asked:

What does it mean for hernia to be reducible?

2 doctor answers6 doctors weighed in
Dr. Michael Zadeh
General Surgery 17 years experience
Can push it back in: A hernia is when abdominal contents protrude through a weakness or "hole" in the abdominal wall muscles. A hernia is called "reducible" when its contents can be pushed back into the abdominal cavity. This can occur either spontaneously or with manual pressure.

Can a ingunial hernia go away on its own or with meds?

No: A inguinal hernia is a structural disorder that requires surgical correction. No meds are available to correct this condition. Seek the care of a surgeon experienced with this type of operation. Feel better.
