A member asked:

What can make water potable?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Cleaning: Water is non-drinkable if it contains infectious organisms or dissolved material that is unpleasant to the taste. To get rid of these there are devices with filters, inorganic salt removal systems and dissolved substances which can kill bacteria and microbes. Most outdoor supply stores have excellent devices and information about this.
