Does having sjogrens syndrome mean my immune system is destroying my salivary glands?

Too some extent....: In sjogren's, all exocrine water producing glands are hit. For many that is most readily recognized as decreased saliva and tears. But the speed and variability of sjogren's is quite striking. Most patients have very mild disease. I use plaquenyl and oral gold. Steroids may help. For more severe disease, a drug called Rituxan (rituximab) is waiting.

No: Your immune system with any autoimmune disease is in overdrive. With sjogrens syndrome salivary tissues are affected. This does not mean it completely destroys your salivary glands. Most people will have a dry mouth. Try drinking a lot of water to keep the dryness to a minimum.
