Get tested: If you suspect COPD or have other problems with breathing you should see a doctor who can order a spirometry or pulmonary function test to find out for sure. I recommend this testing for anyone who has been a smoker or for anyone having shortness of breath to help determine the cause and severity. It's a quick test available in many places.

Diagnosis...: Copd, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, can be diagnosed with pulmonary function testing. It shows obstruction that is not completely reversible with bronchodilator therapy. It is incurable and slowly progressive. If you smoke, smoking cessation is absolutely imperative to decrease airway inflammation. See your doctor for diagnosis, treatment and help with smoking cessation.

PFTs: Pulmonary function testing is the gold standard, and will generally tell you if you have COPD and what stage you are. This is complemented by physical exam, history, especially of smoking or exposures, and x-rays or ct scans.
