It depends...: ...On the cause. There are many causes of sciatica. See a doctor who specializes in musculoskeletal disorders to determine the cause of your sciatica and to recommend an appropriate treatment plan. Lumbar spinal epidural steroid injections can provide relief if the cause is a localized intervertebral disk hernia. If the cause is spasm of the piriformis muscle, a spinal injection would not work.

Possible: Sciatica is usually an inflammatory condition frequently caused via compression of one of the spinal nerves causing the inflammation. Cortisone is an anti inflammatory. Given as a muscular injection can help more than by taking it by mouth but giving it at the source of the compression (epidural injection) may yield a better result.

Steroids/sciatica: Yes it will probably help but can not be depended on as a long term solution. Seek further help to resolve this musculoskeletal issue.

Pinched Nerve: I would suggest seeing a pain/spine specialist to evaluate you further to evaluate what level and what can be done to treat you. There are interventional treatments besides medications and surgeries that might reduce or eliminate the pain altogether. Epidural Steroid Injections are helpful but you need to get evaluated to determine if that is right for you.

Sometimes yes: If you are sure you have sciatica, sometimes a cortisone injection to the lower back will help. At least, it will help if that is the source of the problem. This is a common treatment for radiculopathy. Other treatments that help are physical therapy, medication, and sometimes surgery, although most people prefer the conservative treatments first.
