Elbow grease: Medications are effective to varying degrees in killing lice and lice eggs(nits), but the eggs are cemented the the hair shaft. They can be removed with 'nit combs' or by hand. You can even hire professional 'nitpickers' (really!) . Schools usually have 'no nit' policies, but old nits do not not necessarily signify an active or contagious infection.
