15-25 yrs or longer: Most contemporary hip replacement bearings will last 15-25 years. The heavier your are or the more active you are on your hip, the faster the bearings can wear down. Bearings can be changed decades later if they wear down. Metal on plastic bearings have the least controversial issues and are the most commonly implanted. Other bearings have pros and cons and include ceramic or metal on metal.
