Watch it: Put hot compresses on it for now; if it's an infection, it may suppurate where it is, or disappear; if it becomes very painful or spreads fast, an office visit is urgent. The most common perplexing red knot is one of a group of sore erythema nodosum nodules on the shins. These stay around for several days or longer, and if it's one of them, it should prompt an office visit as they're a warning.
