Yes: Metaplasia is a reversible change in cell types. However, for the change to reverse, the insult, stimulus, factor causing the change has to be removed.

Perhaps: If you are speaking of intestinal metaplasia of the esophagus, generally does not resolve spontaneously. It can on occasion but only with very limited disease. It is treatable with a few different modalities (rfa and cryotherapy). This is generally only done in cases of high-grade dysplasia.

Recent report: In new england journal demonstrates that before 35 brings one's risk similar to the non-smoking population. Smoking leads to death from other cancers, heart, and vascular causes as well as repsiratory destruction, emphysema. But quitting even up to 65 seems to be associated with benefit. Despite better treatment, this disease has one of the lowest success rates, especially when not confined to the lung.

Reflux is associated: With intestinal meta-plasia of the esophagus, and it is an association with esophagus cancer. Tobacco and alcohol and now hpv are other associations, but none are proven causes. Curiously h pylorii is associated with gastric ulcers, cancer and malt, but its presence seems to reduce esophagus cancer. Association are not proven causes.
