Here: Idio means unknown cause. Cirrhosis is a non-specific description of scarring of the liver causing chronic disease.

Cause: "idiopathic" means you don't know the cause. In most people with cirrhosis, the cause is known (alcoholism, hepatitis c, hepatitis b). If you have idiopathic cirrhosis, it means the cause hasn't been determined.
