Acute vs chronic hep b...are the symptoms for both generally the same in the early stages? some stiffness, joint pain, ab pain? or are they different?

Very different: Acute hep b has a wide variation of presentations, from no symptoms at all, to making you very sick. Same goes for chronic hep b, depending on how far along the disease is, although it is usually asymptomatic.
