A member asked:

I am caring for my mother, she has antibiotic resistant sepsis...can i get it? i currently have a uti.

Depends: Where is her infection and do the doctors think it's contagious? Most sepsis occurs from bacteria that reside in us, but if you both had the same UTI you could also be at risk. Are you taking antibiotics for your uti?

Yes: You can definitely get it from your mother, and vice versa. Check your urine to see what bacteria are causing the uti, treat accordingly, and observe strict hygiene precautions when taking care of your mother such as hand washing after each contact, using gloves especially if she has wounds etc. Consult your doctor for a comprehensive list of what you should do.

No: Extremely unlikely for a healthy person to get by direct transmission the kind of bacteria you are talking about.
