Go see your doc....: Bad pains in the lower left abdo in a male could be diverticulitis . Sitting up puts pressure on any abscess or movement. He needs an ultrasound and a urine test. This can be arranged in the office. Also, his doctor will exam him and check his abdomen. If he has a fever, i would go to the er now. If not, see your doctor in the morning.
