my boyfriend has a bump that looks like a pimple on the back of his neck but its hard like a ball, he can't move his neck from side to side or get comfortable on his back or stomach when laying down, what could it be?

Need removal: Most often a hard painful masses on the neck could be an infected sebaceous cyst and needs to be treated with antibiotic if red or drained if fluctuant or excision if hard and not infected. Other masses could be the cause of this problem and further work up is needed by a physician to role out possible rare things such as tumors by doing CT scan of the neck..
