Irritated eye: Any eye with a surface problem will hurt, get red and water to protect itself with the excess tearing going down into the nose on the affected side. You ophthalmologist can evaluate the eye and determine the cause and the best treatment.

Corneal abrasion: Sounds like you have an abrasion on your eye. This could be a recurrent erosion, or a poorly healed abrasion from the past. It is also possible that you have a particle stuck under your kid. If you don't get better in a day or so, i would suggest seeing an eye doc.
