Callus from friction: Calluses form when there is friction or pressure on the skin. On the palms, calluses form after activities like using a hammer for construction, using a shovel for digging, playing tennis, etc... On the knuckles, calluses are unusual unless a person is hitting things with his fists, is crawling on his knuckles, etc... If there are calluses appearing for no reason, a doctor should examine them.
