Focused attention: Hypnosis uses our natural abilities to focus attention -- like getting so absorbed in a movie that we screen out everything else. Attention can then be focused on specific thoughts or tasks. It's not "sleep." a hypnotic state allows you to respond better to desired suggestions, such as stopping smoking, or diminishing anxiety or pain. The hypnotist can also make suggestions to recall what's said.
