Rarely : Given a normal health history, colon cancer is exceedingly rare in a 22 yo.

Not often: Although it's possible, it's unlikely. A study i just read sited of people ages 20-49 about 8.4/100, 000. Keep in mind that includes the range of ages. If you have family with colon cancer at a young age, that would increase your risk....And you would not be in the 8.5/100, 00.

Less than 1-2%: http://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/htmlcolorect.html from 2005-2009, the median age at diagnosis for cancer of the colon and rectum was 69 years of age3. Approximately 0.1% were diagnosed under age 20; 1.1% between 20 and 34; 4.0% between 35 and 44; 13.4% between 45 and 54; 20.4% between 55 and 64; 24.0% between 65 and 74; 25.0% between 75 and 84; and 12.0% 85+ years of age.

A 43-year-old member asked:

How rare is colon cancer in a 25 year old?

Dr. Uma Swamy

Quite Rare: It is relatively rare. This raises the question of a genetic predisposition to this cancer (e.g. Lynch syndrome). The 25yo with the colon cancer should be seen by a genetics counseling team as well for possible genetic testing.
