It depends: Every tumor is different in it's rate of growth an even it's potential to spread so there is no hard and fast rule to answer this question.
Dr. Crystal Twynham
General Surgery 33 years experience
Varies a lot: How fast tumor grows, where it started, if spread to nodes/other places, treatments (chemo, surgery, radiation), cancer genetics, age at diagnosis, family history, lifestyle (quit smoking), positive attitude, a "treatment team, " good nutrition, strong social support, learning/asking questions, and participating in care & choices all make a big difference. There is no one answer to this question.

How long could colon cancer take to develop from stage to stage?

Years....we think.: Every individual tumor is different. The "teaching" is it takes 5 years for a polyp to undergo malignant change (turn into cancer) from there, it depends on location, age and many other factors we don't yet understand. Colon cancer can be indolent (slow growing) or aggressive. It depends on the individual cancer, and everyone is different.

Many years: Patients can present with stage-4 colon cancer. This takes many years(10+) years to evolve. But early colon cancer treated with surgery can alter relapse as stage -4 disease. This can happen in a shorter time, anywhere from one to 5 years..

Varies. ~10yrs: In general, we think about 10 years. Hence the "standard" colon screening recommendation (by colonoscopy) of every 10 years if the colon is well prepped and without pre-cancerous polyps. Colon cancer can grow faster especially in some familial syndromes. Individuals with polyps may and likely do need more frequent followup. Recs individualized by the GI physician.

Good question but: ..Impossible to answer with certainty. Different cancers will behave differently so the real focus should be to detect the cancer early or even before it becomes cancer (polyp) rather than hoping it does not progress. Folks, talk to your docs and get your colonoscopies on time!
