Yes: Usually a catheter is placed to drain the bladder during a hysterectomy. The bladder sits in front of the uterus so to decrease chance of injury to the bladder draining it helps. Also, after surgery near the bladder it may be difficult to empty the bladder immediately after surgery so this prevents over distention of the bladder.
