Targeting/amifostine: Amifostine is a radio protective agent that sometimes is used in head and neck or brain radiotherapy to reduce the side effects of the treatment. Careful planning to reduce the dose to adjacent normal tissues is also quite important in minimizing side effects. Other things are fairly site specific.

Depends...many ways: Radiation causes side effects by causing inflammation in the irradiated tissues. This inflammation can lead to a variety of symptoms and side effects depending on the areas affected. The field of "integrative oncology" is focused on helping you to reduce these side effects using conventional and complementary therapies. Check out: www.Integrativeoncology-essentials.Com.
