Yes, briefly: During rem sleep when we dream, all our muscles except the eye muscles and the diaphragm are inactive to prevent us from acting out our dreams. Some people need chest wall and neck muscles to breathe adequately and during rem sleep they may have apneas (periods without breathing). If you dream you are holding your breath, you generally actually do during your sleep.
