Both Cause Infection: Most infections are caused by either virus or bacteria. Viral infections are more common, often self-limited and do not require antibiotic therapy. Many are even more contagious than many bacterial infections. Bacterial infections sometimes require antibiotic therapy and can also be contagious. Physicians many times seek source of infection to avoid antibiotic overuse-which can lead to resistance.
