Dark from hematoma: Bruise appearance depends upon 3 variables: amount of underlying tissue damage whereby more damage equals more local bleeding and larger darker tinted bruise; depth below skin whereby a deep bruise further below an area of thick overlying skin and tissue may appear lighter colored; and duration of bleeding within injured tissue whereby longer periods of bleeding causes darker discoloration.
