Options vary: Lcis is not cancer but a marker for increased risk of future breast cancer. After finding lcis, women should increase the number of breast exams and mammograms they get per year. Some women at increased risk may take drugs like tamoxifen or Raloxifene to reduce their risk of breast cancer. A small number of women with very strong family histories of breast cancer may consider bilateral mastectomy.

Dr. J Roberts answered

Bilateral mastectomy: Lpbular carcinoma in situ (lcis) itself is only a risk marker of disease and not itself a cancer diagnosis. The DX of lcis in, say, the right great raises the specter of ductal carcinoma in situ (dcis) in either breast. To militate against the development of an invasive carcinoma of either lcis or dcis, many patients opt for double mastectomy w/ reconstruction.
