After hernia surgery, how long will my bowels not work?

Depends: Mostly on how long and how much narcotic pain medication you use after surgery. It is not uncommon to be constipated and need a few days before bowels function after hernia surgery. Drink plenty of liquids, decrease narcotic pain medication use, and go to the drug store to get a laxative if needed.

Post-op Constipation: It is very common for someone after hernia surgery to be rather constipated. This is usually due to post-operative incisional pain, relative early inactivity as well as the use of opioid pain medications. If possible, wean off the opioids, get up and walk, drink plenty of fluids, and take a mild laxative as needed.
