Possibly: Degenerative disc usually have effect upon the nerve exiting around their location. There is a dermatome MAP used to help diagnose which nerve is involved along with muscle involvement. If the disk/spinal nerve corresponds to the area of pain, then it may be the culprit. A good neurologic evaluation checking for correlation would be helpful.

Possible: Degenerative changes can lead to inflammation creating pain but so can other issues that are not spine related. If the pain is that bad, you should see your doctor to make sure it is not another problem.
