By observation: Asperger was a physician who described a disorder in older children who had defects in social interaction and excessive talking without meaningful content. He described these about the same time as kanner described autism in younger children. The diagnosis remains in the eye of the beholder. Asperger's is : Diagnosed by the presence of an observable set of behaviors, a thorough developmental, medical, & 3-generation family history plus standardized testing of the neurodevelopmental profile. Tests of social understanding like the tops can be done at 6 yrs. & up. Tests of all language skills, like the celf reveal deficits in pragmatics (conversational) & prosody ( intonation) skills in younger kids.
